Eligibility: Applicants must be starting their junior or senior year in college or be in graduate school at a California school. They must be able to attend the awards ceremony in Los Angeles at their own expense. Applicants must demonstrate a desire to fulfill a leadership role in their chosen field of study and be a contributor to U.S.-Japan relations and cultural exchanges. Students must also submit an essay showing how their studies will contribute to leadership or to the relationship between the United States and Japan.

Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents for at least three consecutive years before applying for the grant and must hold a Ph.D. or other terminal degree. The grant is for up to eight weeks for independent research projects. Projects must contribute to the knowledge of political, economic or cultural development of the region and how that knowledge is relevant to U.S. foreign policy.
